This tutorial will show you how to make Frankenstein marshmallow key chains. The pattern is based on my marshmallow key chain pattern (found here). I used Red Heart Soft yarn in black and Re-Up Lion Brand yarn in “lime” for the key chains in the pictures, however, any medium weight black and green yarns should work. In addition, you will need a small amount of light weight (3) grey yarn for the head bolts. I used Patons Grace “clay” color. As with the original marshmallow key chains, you can also leave off the key ring and just make amigurumi Frankin marshmallows.
The key chains are about 1.5 inches tall, however, using different yarns might result in different sized key chains. If you want a smaller keychain, try doing the pattern completely in light weight (3) yarn. In contrast, for a larger key chain try a heavier weight yarn. This tutorial should not be too difficult if you are familiar with crochet stitches like the magic ring, single crochets, crocheting in the back or front loops and color changes. The key chains would make cute Halloween decorations and they don’t take too long to make. The pattern is in US crochet terms.

Abbreviations
SC – Single Crochet
ST – Stitch
INC – Increase (two single crochet in one stitch)
DEC – Decrease (single crochet decrease aka sc2tog)
FO – Fasten Off
Bolts (Make 2)
In the grey yarn using the 3mm crochet hook:
4 sc in the magic ring. Then slip stitch in the first sc and FO leaving a long tail.
Frankenstein Marshmallow Body
Using the 4.5mm crochet hook begin in black:
R1: 6 sc in the magic ring – (6)
R2: 2 sc in each sc around (in other words inc in each stitch) – (12)
R3: (1 sc, 1 inc) repeat 6 times – (18)
R4: 18 sc in the back loops only – (18)
Attach the key ring to the top with black yarn
Change to green
R5-R11: 18 sc around – (18)
- The eyes are placed between Rows 7 and 8, about three stitches apart. I stopped to insert the eyes and eye backings after completing Row 10. If you complete more rows before inserting the eyes, it is hard to get the eye backings in.
- Using the black embroidery thread, embroiderer a stitch on the side of the head. I placed it on the right side across Row 5 to Row 7.
- Embroider the mouth with black thread on Row 10.
Embroidering The Mouth
I used pins to help outline where I wanted to embroider the mouth. I started on the left side and worked down, then across to the right.
Sewing on the Bolts
Sew the bolts to each side of the head between approximately Rows 8 and 10. I sewed the bolts on after completing Row 11. The bolts are roughly two rows back from the eyes. I suggest pinning everything together to ensure you’re happy with the placement before sewing the pieces on.
Now continue on with Row 12
R12: 18 sc in the back loops only – (18)
Begin to stuff key chain
R13: (sc, 1 dec) repeat 6 times – (12)
Finish stuffing the key chain. Don’t over stuff.
R14: Dec around – (6)
FO leaving a long tail. Thread through remaining sts and pull to close. Weave in Ends. Push the bottom of the key chain up so it sits relatively flat.
Now you’re all done. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
